What each platform takes

On a £20 sale to a UK buyer, PayPal takes 88p, eBay takes nothing from a private seller, and Vinted takes nothing from the seller because it charges the buyer instead. Business sellers on eBay pay the most: on that £20 of clothing they'd pay £3.42 once VAT is added.

PayPal

For goods and services payments into a UK account, PayPal charges 2.9% of the payment plus a fixed 30p. If the buyer's PayPal account is in the EEA it adds another 1.29%, and 1.99% for the rest of the world. Converting foreign currency costs extra, which this calculator doesn't include. eBay private sellers

UK private sellers pay no final value fee and no regulatory operating fee on most items. Cars, motorbikes and other vehicles are the exception. You get 300 free listings a month, then pay 35p each, and there's a 3% international fee when the buyer is outside the UK. Source: eBay selling fees for private sellers.

eBay business sellers

Business sellers pay a final value fee on the whole order, postage included. It's a percentage set by category, usually between 6.9% and 14.9%, and some categories drop to a lower rate above a price point. On top come a per-order fee of 30p (orders of £10 or less) or 40p (over £10), a 0.35% regulatory operating fee, an international fee of 1.05% to 2% for buyers abroad, and VAT at 20% on all of it. Vinted

Vinted doesn't charge sellers. The buyer pays the item price, postage and a Vinted fee, which Vinted describes as "usually 3% to 8% + £0.3 to £0.8" depending on the item, the order value and whether it's a bundle. The calculator shows that range so you can see the price your buyer is weighing up. Source: Vinted fee help page.

Worked example: a business seller on eBay

You sell a jacket for £25 and charge £3.50 postage, as an eBay business seller who isn't VAT-registered. eBay works out its fees on £28.50.

Final value fee, 11.9% of £28.50£3.39
Per-order fee (order over £10)£0.40
Regulatory operating fee, 0.35%£0.10
VAT at 20% on those fees£0.78
Total fees£4.67
You receive£23.83

If postage actually costs you £3.20, you're left with £20.63. Had you sold the same jacket as a private seller, you'd have received the full £28.50.

Do you pay tax on what you sell?

Usually not if you're clearing out your own things. HMRC says you're unlikely to pay tax on personal items sold from your home, like the contents of a loft or garage. If you buy or make things to sell at a profit, you're probably trading, and profits above the £1,000 trading allowance need reporting.

Since January 2024, platforms send HMRC details of sellers who make 30 or more sales in a calendar year or receive about £1,700. Being reported doesn't mean you owe anything. See GOV.UK's guide to selling goods or services on a digital platform, its check for whether you need to tell HMRC, and the rules on the trading allowance. This page isn't tax advice.

Questions people ask

How much does PayPal take from £100?

For a goods and services payment from a UK buyer, PayPal takes £3.20 (2.9% plus 30p), so £96.80 reaches your balance. From a buyer in the EEA it takes £4.49, and from anywhere else £5.19.

Does eBay charge private sellers in the UK?

Not on most sales. UK private sellers pay no final value fee or regulatory operating fee, except on cars and other motors. You do pay a 3% international fee if the buyer is outside the UK, and 35p per listing after your free monthly allowance.

Who pays the Vinted fee?

The buyer. Vinted charges sellers nothing, so you get the full item price. The buyer pays a fee on top that Vinted says is usually 3% to 8% of the price plus 30p to 80p, depending on the item and order.

Does eBay charge fees on postage?

For business sellers, yes. The final value fee and the regulatory operating fee are worked out on the total the buyer pays, including postage. Private sellers in the UK pay neither fee, so postage isn’t charged.

Why is my eBay fee higher than the category rate?

Because three things sit on top of it for business sellers: the per-order fee (30p on orders of £10 or less, 40p above), the 0.35% regulatory operating fee, and 20% VAT, which eBay adds to all its business fees. VAT-registered sellers can usually reclaim the VAT.

Will eBay or Vinted tell HMRC about my sales?

Platforms report you to HMRC if you make 30 or more sales in a calendar year or receive about £1,700 (2,000 euros) or more. Being reported doesn’t mean you owe tax. Selling your own unwanted things is unlikely to be taxable.

What this doesn't cover

Currency conversion charges, eBay promoted listings, optional listing upgrades, eBay Motors, Vinted Bumps, and PayPal's lower QR code and volume rates. The calculator rounds each fee to the penny, so a platform's statement can differ by a penny or two.
